Lighting Types and Ideas for Every Room of the House
If you want your house to be lighted well, the answer lies on the use of the right type of light for your home.
To review a little, there are two general types of light—incandescent and fluorescent. The first one is the common bulb that has been used over the past decades. Light is produced because of the presence of filament in the bulb. In terms of design, incandescent bulbs are ideal if you want subdued lighting for the room. The light given off is yellow and warm and so, it will also be helpful during the cold winter months.
The fluorescent light is more energy efficient. This is the white light that we use. It is ideal if you have a colored room and would want to emphasize the colors that are present there when the sun is no longer up.
There are lights that are grouped according to their particular uses. These lights either play an important role or are just there to add appeal to a room.
For the bedroom, the library, or the study room, reading lights are essential. These are most commonly known as floor lamps which are placed on the ground and go over your shoulder for proper lighting or as table lamps which are held in front or beside the person. These lights are designed for casual reading and they generally don’t use up too much wattage.
In workrooms, the brightness the light gives out should be more intense because of the tasks that need to be done. It will also follow that the energy that is required to power the lights are also higher.
Bathroom lighting is focused on allowing the person to look at himself or herself in the mirror without shadows. This gives an opportunity for proper inspection and cleaning. Central lights can be placed near the mirror where your bath vanity is located. You can use either incandescent or fluorescent lamps but generally, fluorescent will give you a better look at yourself and your skin tone.
If you stay and cook in the kitchen a lot, placing a light overhead and in the middle of the room will not be enough. You can add another floor lamp or install another overhead light directly above where you are mostly doing the tasks like the sink or the kitchen counter.
In the living room or the entertainment room where you watch TV, it is recommended that you have at least a small lamp to add light to the room aside from what is coming from the TV set. This will make TV viewing more comfortable.
On the patio or your backyard, if you decide to have lights installed in them, consider mounting them in lamp posts. If you have furniture like outdoor dining sets or outdoor sofas, have the lights over them or near them. You might also want to have lights for your safety. Lighting the yard both in front and at the back of your house will give you a clear view if ever someone trespasses into your property.
